Version 1.81a  ( released 2016-04-8 )

  • The following parameters in an imported cif file can now be read:
  • "_space_group_IT_number"
    " _space_group_name_H-M_alt"

Version 1.80beta  ( released 2011-05-10 )

  • An issue related to the handling of fractional coordinate in special cases has been fixed. See ReleaseNote1.80beta.pdf for detail.
NOTE: BS data files (*.bs) saved on BS with the updated space group file will make them unloadable on other installation of BS with the older version of the space group file, and vise versa.

Version 1.77c  ( released 2008-01-16 )( released 2011-04-03 with updated Help File)

  • Some portions of the code have been revised and the updated space group file has been incorporated.
NOTE: BS data files (*.bs) saved on BS with the updated space group file will make them unloadable on other installation of BS with the older version of the space group file, and vise versa.

Version 1.77b  ( released 2008-01-16 )( released 2009-07-08 with updated Space Group File)

  • Some portions of the code have been revised and the updated space group file has been incorporated.
NOTE: BS data files (*.bs) saved on BS with the updated space group file will make them unloadable on other installation of BS with the older version of the space group file, and vise versa.

Updated Space Group File  ( released 2008-01-16 )

  • Some of the wrong entries in the space group file have been fixed, and all the possible space group settings have been added. All users of BS are urged to replace their current spgr.dat file with this new file.
NOTE: BS data files (*.bs) saved on BS with the updated space group file will make them unloadable on other installation of BS with the older version of the space group file, and vise versa.

Version 1.76  ( released 2007-12-14 )

  • "See Inside Poly" now has a slider which lets you adjust opacity of the polyhedra when inside is shown. The slider is found on the tool bar next to the "Perspective" slider.

Version 1.74  ( released 2007-12-11 )

  • One of the bug fixes in the prvious version created a bug, and it has been reversed in this new version.

Version 1.73  ( released 2007-12-06 )

  • A couple of bugs associated with "Edit Chemical Structure Information" dialog box have been fixed: catching identical coordinates of entries and checking value limits.

Version 1.72  ( released 2007-11-30 )

This version addresses the problems with version 1.60, and has 3 modifications:

  1. More flexible indexing scheme makes it possible to accomodate larger numbers of elements than previous versions.
  2. On previous versions, clicking on a flat 2D (polyheadra) object didn't cause selection of the object unless "see inside poly" button was pressed. This bug has been fixed.
  3. There may have been more than one, but, at least, a bug has been fixed which could have cuased previous versions of BS to crash or behave strangely after deleting some element(s).

Version 1.60  ( released 2007-11-09 )

  • This version has been removed because it cannot read BS files from older versions, and its own BS files cannot be read by older versions, either.
  • This version tried to address the problem reported by Hermann Gies: BS crashed when large number of atoms were present in the unit cell.

Version 1.52  ( released 2004-08-11 )

  • Due to Sudhanshu's error report, buffer-overflow problem in "save", which caused BS to crash, has been fixed.

Version 1.51b  ( released 2003-11-22 )

  • The previous version 1.50 launches a web browser each time a user runs it. Due to the user's complaint, the problem has been fixed.

Version 1.51a  ( released 2003-11-21 )

  • The previous version 1.50 reports launch of Balls & Stikcs each time a user runs it. Due to a user's complaint, the reporting feature has been removed from this new version.

Version 1.50  ( released 2003-10-20 )

  • Modification has been made to improve lone atoms handling due to the suggestions of Mas Subramanian. New features are accessed by "Delete Lone Atoms" and "Recover Deleted Atoms" under "Edit" on the menu.

Version 1.48  ( released 2003-04-27 )

  • Compass axes can be labeled as either a-b-c or x-y-z, and compass cube's outline thickness can be controled.

Version 1.47  ( released 2003-03-03 )

  • Again, at Hermann Gies's suggestion, bond-thickness-exaggeration function has been added to BS. This function and previously added fog function can be accessed by pressing [Ex] button on the floating toolbar.

Version 1.45  ( released 2003-01-30 )

  • At Hermann Gies's suggestion, depth-cuing (fog) function has been added to BS. The function can be accessed by pressing [Fog] button on the floating toolbar.

Version 1.42  ( released 2002-05-25 )

  • A bug which must have annoyed the users has been found and removed. It should have prompted "wrong numerical data" message even when input data was in correct numerical format.
  • Some users have not been able to run BS on some computers. The reason was because BS required a user of his own account on the computer, but those users didn't have their own accounts and were using guest accounts. This limitation has been removed.
  • At the request of Hyungrak Kim (at Los Alamos National Laboratory ), capability to distinguish core atoms and surface atoms in clustering(Ctrl + C) has been implemented. Refer to "Missing From Documentation" section for details.

Version 1.40  ( released 2002-05-09 )

  • Structure clustering(Ctrl + C) capability has improved. Before, when you defined a sphere, whatever was in the structure that was also inside the sphere remained. However, if the sphere was larger than the current structure, the structure didn't grow to fill the sphere. Now, when you choose re-structure option when clustering, structure will grow to fill the void. Also, display of the sphere's volume and surface area has been added.
  • Atom-count display has been added. The detailed atom counts are shown inside a pair of parentheses in the atoms show/hide control in the extended tool bar.
  • There was a bug which led to incorrect counting of shown/hidden objects. This bug has been fixed.

Version 1.39  ( released 2002-04-13 )

  • Older versions were not able to load a CIF file properly when blank lines were between site entries. This bug has been fixed.

Version 1.38  ( released 2002-02-27 )

  • It used to be that out-lines of opaque polyhedra were translucent. Thus, some objects behind some opaque polyhedra which shouldn't be seen were seen through the out-lines. This problem has been fixed.

Version 1.37  ( released 2002-02-14 )

  • A bug which prevented correct reading of numerical input from user has been fixed. (Reported by Hyungrak Kim in Davis, CA.)

Version 1.35  ( released 2001-12-01 )

  • BS manual has been updated.
  • BS has improved in term of conforming to CIF standard.
  • The color property control now remembers the control(simple or complex) you used last time for each object. So, next time you access the property control of the same object, you will see the same control(simple or complex).

Version 1.33  ( released 2001-07-10 )

  • Collision detection between polyhedra has improved.
  • A bug which may leave some atoms in selected color right after creation of polyhedron(s) has been fixed.

Version 1.31  ( released 2001-07-03 )

  • Viewing angle adjustment capability has improved.
  • A bug with command-line file name passing has been fixed.

Version 1.30  ( released ??? )

  • A bug responsible for inaccurate floating-point-number conversion to a string, which should have plagued all the previous versions of BS, has been fixed.
